General Motors

The Rise

General Motors was created by Bill Durant. The company is bases in Detroit,MI on Jefferson East st.

GM R&D was the world’s first automotive research center. It was organized in 1920 by inventor Charles F. Kettering. Headquartered in Warren, Michigan, the GM Research Lab is a network of six laboratories, six science offices and collaborative relationships in over twelve countries including working relationships with universities, government groups, suppliers and other partners from across the globe.

The company has long worked on alternative-technology vehicles, and has recently led the industry with ethanol burning flexible-fuel vehicles that can run on either E85 (ethanol) or gasoline. They also have on star on their newer cars.

what has made them so popular.

GM has ranked as the second largest global automaker by sales. GM's engines were highly successful in the Indy Racing League (IRL) throughout the 1990s, winning many races in the small V-8 class. GM has also done much work in the development of electronics for GM auto racing: In 2004, GM redirected resources from the development of new sedans to an accelerated refurbishment of their light trucks and SUVs for introduction as 2007 models in early 2006. Shortly after this decision, fuel prices increased by over 50% and this in turn affected both the trade-in value of used vehicles and the perceived desirability of new offerings in these market segments. The current marketing plan is to tout these revised vehicles extensively as offering the best fuel economy in their class (of vehicle). GM claims its hybrid trucks will have fuel economy improvements of 25%.: In the late 1990s, the U.S. economy was on the rise and GM and Ford gained market share producing enormous profits primarily from the sale of light trucks and sport-utility vehicles.: Since 1996, General Motors has been the exclusive source of funding for Safe Kids USA's "Safe Kids Buckle Up" program, a national initiative to ensure child automobile safety through education and inspection. Through 2002, the Pace Awards program led by GM, EDS, and SUN Microsystems, gave over $1.2 billion of in-kind contributions which includes computers to over 18 universities to support engineering education. In 2009, the GM led group has helped the Pace Awards program worldwide. General Motors is a leading contributor to charity. In 2004, GM gave $51,200,000 in cash contributions and $17,200,000 in-kind donations to charitable causes.

GM is known for Trucks and SUV's.

Women’s roles in mice and men

Curley’s wife, Aunt Clara, Susy is women in the book. Susy has the whore house with the 5 women in it. The men like her because she nice and just let the men hang out even if they don’t want a girl. Aunt Clara is lennie’s aunt who uses to take care of him and George knows her so when she passed he felt the need to watch out for lennie. Curley’s wife is a woman who goes around and cause trouble with all the men. So the men don’t like her to be around and tell her she needs to stay home, they have no respect for her.

Curley’s wife feels that she always stuck in the house and that’s why she always comes to the ranch and claims she’s looking for Curley. She don’t want to be alone in the house all day and just hear about Curley giving the guys the one, two. Back in this time and day women didn’t really have the same rights as men to like to day. Today women have the land of opportunity like men did back then.

People in power

Power is when someone as control of the other person, someone who is in charge of everything, and someone who decide who get fired or not. In this book I will say Curley and his dad (“the boss”) are the people in power. I choose the boss because he has the power to fire anybody he wants, and he is the one that pays everybody. Curley is the son of the boss and he also has the same right that is father has, if he doesn’t like some of the workers he will tell his father, and he is in charge of everything basically. Curley was in the golden glove and he went to the final of the match. curley got is power from his dad and he always take advantage of that power he always going to the burn looking for trouble form the workers. His father didn’t get his power from anywhere he is the owner of everything in that place.

I see no difference with the people in power back then till now, everything is still the same, the boss of a company is the person in charge of everything and the boss has a daughter or a son they are going to be actually like Curley too. The land of opportunity show a lot in this book because gorge and lenne has a dream of having their own place, and they know that as long as they do their job well and get enough money, they will be able to have their dream.

People with disabilities.

There is only one person with a disability in the book. His name is lennie.  Lennie has a mental disability and most of the people in the book look at him like he is a little kid. But he is as strong and a bull and works till his work is done. Everyone treats him like he should not be there. And curly take advantage of his disability and starts a fight with him. But he finds out fast how strong lennie is.

Many people take advantage of mentally challenged people. But George treated lennie like he was his little brother in the book. Even slim and candy treated him like he should be treated and not like a kid taking advantage of him. Treat others how you want to be treated.
